Tikhoretsk railway station

Tikhoretsk railway station, part of the Vladikavkaz Railway, stands as one of the earliest stations in Kuban. The station’s historic building, constructed in 1883, attracts visitors with its ancient architectural charm. In 1902 and 1905, Tikhoretsk experienced significant social unrest, marked by worker meetings, strikes, and uprisings, particularly at the locomotive repair workshops. In 1918, the station served as the headquarters for revolutionary troops in the North Caucasus. Throughout the Civil War, the station building saw occupation by both the Red Army and tsarist troops. Currently, efforts are underway to repair and restore the station building.

Tikhoretsk Museum of Local History

The Tikhoretsk Museum of Local History was established in 1959. Initially, its exhibition focused on the history of the labor movement in Tikhoretsk and Kuban. Since 1987, the museum has been operating in its current form, featuring a permanent historical exhibition showcasing the city’s development, curated by the artist N.G. Popov. Moreover, there is an exhibition honoring D.I. Kozlov, a two-time Hero of Socialist Labor and the chief designer of special space equipment, who was born in Tikhoretsk. The museum is located in the early 20th-century city public assembly building.

Steam Locomotive monument

Near the station square stands a monument called “Steam Locomotive,” manufactured in 1935 in Kharkov. This locomotive played a crucial role during the Great Patriotic War, transporting military equipment, fuel, and ammunition. Accompanying the advancing troops, it traveled thousands of kilometers along the battle route, even reaching the Silesian railway station in Berlin. The locomotive had a crew of 13 people, led by Anatoly Zhdanovich. His five-year-old son also accompanied them, unofficially becoming the fourteenth member of the crew. A special shelter was created for the boy under the locomotive, providing protection from shrapnel during explosions. After World War II, the steam locomotive was used for passenger trains on the Brest – Warsaw – Berlin route. It was later transformed into a monument on May 8, 1975, positioned at the exit of a stone tunnel. The residents of Tikhoretsk show their respect for the monument by regularly placing fresh flowers at its base.

Memorial complex on the Zhukov Square

The memorial complex on Zhukov Square is a mass grave honoring the victims of the Revolution, Civil War, and Great Patriotic War. In March 1918, fallen Tikhoretsk Red Guards who fought against the White Guards were laid to rest at Pribazarnaya Square in Tikhoretsk. The city’s first monument, a wooden pyramid known as the revolutionary Monument of Freedom, was erected at this site. Following the city’s liberation from the Nazis and subsequent bombings, the Freedom Monument and several others were destroyed. In early February, after a funeral gathering, five deceased fighters were interred on the square, and a simple wooden pyramid with a star was placed on the mass grave. And in 1959, the existing monument to the soldiers of fellow countrymen who died during the Revolution, Civil and Great Patriotic Wars was erected.

Memorial plates with the names of Tikhoretsk residents who died the Great Patriotic War were placed at the monument in the 1990s.

Now it is the most sacred place in the city, and laying flowers has become a tradition for newlyweds.
